Titans Shoot Down Those Eagles…

A rather humid night in Groveland where the South Lake Eagles hosted the Titans.

This is one of two local games for me, so it was important we do the deed.

A very compact first half. The Titans had most of the possession which enabled us to created one or two chances. We played the diamond formation in the middle of the park. An attacking midfielder and a holding, just in front of the back four. We started to become a little complacent with our positioning and formation. I didn’t feel we were moving as a team. Our defensive midfielder tended to push forward instead of holding which sucked our center back more into the middle of the park. This became a problem as it left us vulnerable at the back on the counter. It was important to make this clear at the break. Movie as a team.  Lets keep our shape. If the center back steps, the other 3 defenders also step. Otherwise, whats the point? the offside trap is non existant.

After the break, we really came out of the stalls. We were getting wide and getting long. The eagles pitch was rather large, so shaped and fitness were a key. We started to play our two touch football that I like to see. The back four looked more solid and my midfielders had their shape. Switching play and getting wide, we executed down the left hand side. We were one up!, this is more like it. Teams are vulnerable on the wings of you used every space of the pitch. I was happy with the goal – but I still feel we needed to kill the game.

The Eagles created a few chances after conceding the goal. They were pushing more forward and attacking on the counter. Some very alert goal keeping helped to prevent conceding a goal. Really happy with his positioning. I see so many goalkeepers in this district that just stand on the goal line looking like a statue. That’s no good at all. Well…. if you like a mile gap between the goalkeeper and the back four then go right ahead. Like I said, he was moving with play. He was stepping when his back four stepped. Looking confident.

I was really impressed this game with my guy up top, the wolfman as I call him. He uses so much strength and has a quick boost of speed that has to be a nightmare for defenders. He holds the ball up well in support of the brazilian striker. They both were making the runs and definitely were causing a threat. I had said to the wolfman before the game as I did the brazilian last game against the mustangs. I wanted wolfman to score. After a scramble in the box, who was on the end of it? — Ha I loved it. Perhaps I should predict before every game, who is and who I want to score lol. Think it would be interesting. We were up two with 15 to go.

This is what we asked, to have two goals in the bag and a shut out. Titans, why stop here?…there was still time on the clock…we were hungry for a third to really make a stance away from home.

Quick passes between our wing backs and middle mean created width down the left . Free kick just outside the box on the angle. A beautiful position. Go for it, its yours, the call was from the sideline. Just a three-man wall and the keeper to beat, I had a good feeling about this. Curling shot, looped around the wall and over the keeper into the far right hand corner, what a beauty! take a bow son! take a bow! lovely finish. Perfect way to end the night. Made a couple of changes with 5 mins to go. Get the boys some time on the field. We stuck our Irishman upfront, who knows…he may get us a fourth…wasnt to be, but everyone got a crack out of it! — good times!

This was a great night for us, we really changed this second half. We looked great – every man did their job, above all they listened and executed!

Had my family amongst spectators, so the win was even more special!

Day of practice. Then thursday night is the big one. Our rivalry against Doctor Phillips. It’s the friendship cup, not really sure out friendly it will be – soon find out. Will report then…
