Remember remember the fifth of November
Gunpowder, treason and plot.
I see no reason why gunpowder, treason
Should ever be forgot…
Here we are at that time of the year – Its November 5th, Bonfire Night. – I love this time of year, its starting to get cold cold, even here in sunny florida The holidays are upon us. The fifth of November is celebration back home in the UK. For those of you that don’t quite know whats going on….ill give you a little insight to what it’s all about. – First of all , its alot more than the movie, V for Vendetta! Alot of people when they think of november 5th, they all think of the movie, V for vendetta. This movie is a moden day version of what actually happened, it is not accurate- still a good movie tho,
Back in the 17th Century, a man named, Guy Fawkes had a plot t0 blow up the Houses of Parliament. They dug a long tunnel from a house in Westminster, Which led to beneath the Houses of Parliament. In those days, the form of explosives was barrels of Gunpowder, Cutting a long story short, Guy Fawkes was captured and tortured, trialed and executed.
So now, every November 5th – Communities all across the UK celebrate the capture of Guy Fawkes. Traditionally, communities would build their own Bonfire at the village park, or recreation fields. On top we place Guy Fawkes. Children compete to see who can create the best looking Guy. Usually, they stuff a pair of old clothes, full of hay and newspaper – the winner gets their Guy to be placed on top. Children go around the houses of their neighbourhood. A knock on the door with a greeting ” Penny for the Guy?” – they would carry there Guy Fawkes around or even place him in a wheel barrow to raise money. Lots of Fun. There is generally lots of food available, wine, beer and lots for the kids to do -
At the end of the evening, a firework display always happens – this is a final celebration of November 5th and the capture of Guy Fawkes.Children are running around with sparklers, making catherine wheel shapes, and spelling out their name.
Above is the famous poem that we say on this day.
I am just about to leave to attend my Bonfire night, I didn’t make a Guy this year….I knew there was something i was forgetting. If you guys have already been to yours, hope you had lots of fun – those that are leaving like me – wrap up warm and be safe…
Happy 5th of November!!!
